Põhjala
Põhjala (pronounced 'puh-ya-la') is based in Tallinn, Estonia. Founded in 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers, Põhjala quickly gained traction and attracted a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, who had several years of experience from Brewdog.
Põhjala's first beer, Öö Imperial Baltic Porter, was released in early 2013, and for most of that year, their beers were contract-brewed in other facilities while they prepared to open their own brewery. In April 2014, Põhjala completed construction of their first brewery in Tallinn's Nõmme district, starting out with just 5 × 24-hl fermenters. Over the next 2.5 years, they more than quadrupled their annual production capacity.
Since 2014, Põhjala has showcased their beers at many beer festivals worldwide, collaborating with friends from various breweries, including Boneyard, Brew By Numbers, De Struise, Lervig, Stillwater Artisanal, Jester King, Stigbergets, Norway Brewing Company, Jing-A, Mallaskoski, Birrificio Italiano, and To Øl. While Põhjala's beers span a broad range of styles, they have a particular focus on porters, barrel aging, and using ingredients from the forests of Estonia, as well as more contemporary styles such as India Pale Ales and Sours.
At the end of 2018, Põhjala moved to a new facility in the historical Noblessner shipyard area by the sea in North Tallinn. Their new brewery and tap room feature a 50 hl Rolec brewhouse and Framax filing line, state-of-the-art lab facilities, and a tap room with 120 seats and 24 taps, marking a new era for Põhjala. We're thrilled to bring their exceptional brews to our customers.
